Best-selling journalist, historian and author Paul Badde embarks on an exciting quest to discover the truth behind the Holy Face of Manoppello, a relic recently rediscovered and rumored to be the "veil of Veronica". Vatican correspondent for German newspaper Die Welt, journalist Paul Badde was intrigued when he heard of a mysterious image in a remote Italian village--an image of a man's face on byssus cloth. Byssus, or sea silk, is a rare and delicate fabric woven from a silky filament produced by mollusks. It is claimed that the fabric is so thin and delicate that it is impossible to paint on--yet the image in Manoppello is clearly visible and, moreover, when laid over the image of the face on the Shroud of Turin forms a perfect match. Experts determined that the cloth of Manoppello is not Veronica's veil, but rather the face cloth layed over the face of Jesus in the tomb. Unlike the Shroud of Turin, which is a "negative" of the image, the image on the face cloth is a "positive" of the face of Christ. Paul Badde takes the reader along on a thrilling journey of discovery as he travels to research this remarkable relic, tracing the turbulent history of the Holy Face from ancient times up to the historic 2006 visit to Manoppello by Pope Benedict XVI. Illustrated with 16 pages of color photos.

For those who thought that the Shroud of Turin was the first and last of the great Christian relics concerning Jesus Christ, this book might make you believe otherwise. Many of the Shroud authorities are written about in the book including Ian Wilson.

This is a fascinating book which I found to be well witten, exciting and easy to read! It flowed extremely well. I actually had started reading another book and then this one arrived and I began reading it to see how it was and I couldn't put it down!

Ultimately, whether the reader believes that the face on the cloth is made by human hands or not, the story of Paul Baddes journey of discovery and of those others mentioned in the book is quite thrilling.

When I first saw the picture of the face on the cloth, I can't say that I was particularly impressed. However, Badde's descriptions of what it actually appears like in person are quite vivid. Also, hearing about some of the people who believe it to be a genuine likeness of Jesus, such as two Capuchin Stigmatists, which includes Saint Padre Pio, is a very strong argument for authenticity, as far as I am concerned.

I can't wait to make a pilgramage to see it and two other Holy relics I also have been reading about in St. Laurence And The Holy Grail: The Holy Chalice Of Valencia and Sacred Blood Sacred Image: The Sudarium of Oviedo: New Evidence for the Authenticity of the Shroud of Turin.

The Face of God The Rediscovery Of The True Face of Jesus Paul Badde 9781586175153 Books Reviews

Inspirational account of a miraculous image of Christ on a veil made of a very rare material. The veil was lost for a time and discovered during a renovation. This image has inspired and changed lives.
It is one the most inspiring books on this subject that I have read. It gives a great look at the history of the church and its thoughts, as well as beliefs of a people long gone. Take the time to read this book and you might want to look deeper into what makes this world tick.
I have read this book five times..and I always find a new item or information I missed..and I enjoy re-reading it. At first, it is sort of deep reading..because if you have not been to the Vatican, Rome m Manoppello and Israel...not easy to relate to the places Each Chapter is actually an article...and some are not relating to the other chapters. But keeps you going..I love it..so much information..so much research...that also convinced Cardinal Ratzinger..the Author's neighbor, to visit this Christ's Relic on September 1, 2006 as the first Pope to visit the Holy Veil in Manoppello since it was hidden there in the 16th century.

I couldn't put this book down... And had to see the "Holy Face of Manoppello" with my own eyes; so I made a pilgrimage to Manoppello. Everything Paul Badde says about the image is true. It is an indescribable, supernatural, "living image" of the Face of Christ. Photos cannot capture what is seen! I am very grateful to Paul Badde for writing "The Face of God".
I enjoyed the book but I was not convinced. The material that the image is imprinted on is not unique as claimed although extremely rare. I can't see the connection between this and the Shroud of Turin, it would seem that one or the other is a repro(I won't say forgery because that presumes evil intent and I don't think that either arose as a matter of evil intent to mislead). ZMy money is strill on the Shroud as the true image.
Don't want to stop thinking about the face of Jesus. Great book.
Paul Badde did not go out to find a hot story to write, or seek any fame, rather he followed up on a story about a relic that was stolen from the Vatican, and hushed up for centuries, and was discovered in a church, as a veneration icon for who knows how long. This veil was not painted, and it is said to be Veronica's veil when she wiped the face of Jesus on the way of the cross, or one used to cover his face during burial, but why are his eyes open and teeth showing? You have to read this book to find out all the details. When mounted over the Shroud of Turin, the face features and wounds matched up perfectly. Do we now have the True Face of God. The Church thinks so. The Basilica at Manoppello is not a papal basilica.
"Though out faith does not ultimately depend on relics, they can help deepen our faith and that is why the Church blesses the veneration of relics as a means to assisting us to come closer to the Lord and holiness, and deeper love for the Mass, and Our Lord." (EWTN interview with Fr. John Hogan)
A must read.
